Power outages have hit the city of Lancaster, including the University campus, after Storm Desmond passed by on Saturday evening. With the majority of campus without power, the University has advised students to go home for Christmas if it is safe for them to do so.
The University has announced that teaching has been cancelled next week, and term has essentially ended a week earlier than originally planned. Anyone with exams or coursework deadlines should await further instructions from their departments, but the University expects deadlines to be extended.
If students are in need of special assistance (medicine, emergency supplies, etc) then they should contact their college porter or a member of the campus security team. The University has announced that bottled water is available.
If students are unable to go home, then there is a high chance that they will be evacuated from campus accommodation and relocated elsewhere on campus. Power is available in the Great Hall.
Lancaster Railway Station is currently closed, and all trains running north of the city are cancelled. The University has arranged for free buses to transport students to Preston where they will be able to access the rail network.
Wednesday’s Graduation Ceremonies are still expected to go ahead, but an update will be issued on Monday.
